Assam trounced host Odisha by 10 wickets with more than a day to spare in their four-day C K Nayudu Trophy U-23 Plate Group B match at Gandhi Stadium here today. The win fetched Assam seven points and increased their tally to 10 from four matches, while Odisha drew blank and remained on four points from as many games.
Put into bat, Odisha lost wickets in regular intervals before folding up a paltry 117 in 59.5 overs. Only four batsmen reached double digits, while in-form vice-captain Ranji Singh top scored with 37. In reply Assam were all out for 362. Rahul Hazarika and captain Wasiqur Rahaman punished the bowling attack of the home team by notching up a double century and a century respectively
Opening batsman Hazarika slammed 209 (272b, 26x4, 3x6), Rahaman hit 110 (197b, 18x4). The duo was associated in a huge partnership that produced 231 runs for the sixth wicket. Odisha captain Ankit Yadav was most successful bowler for his side, taking three wickets for 83 runs.
After conceding a first-innings lead of 245 runs, Odisha rode on a half-century each by Rajkishan Patel and Shantanu Mishra to compile respectable second-innings total of 269. But Assam capped the win by knocking off the required 25 runs in 3.4 overs.
This was the second defeat in four matches for Odisha, who earlier went down to Haryana by an innings and 87 runs. Odisha will play their last league match against Jharkhand from November 7 to 10.
